Marketing a product or service
May 16th, 2008A particular product or service may have better features than comparable products and services in the market, but unless it is marketed properly it may not capture a significant market share. Though most people use the terms marketing and selling interchangeably, marketing is more comprehensive in the scope of the activities covered and includes advertising, promotion and selling.
While selling involves getting orders from customers, the marketing department plays an important role in deciding which new product is introduced or modifications are to be made in existing products. The methodology used for collection of inputs for taking decisions varies from company to company depending on the kind of product being marketed and size of the company.
Large companies marketing FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) usually conduct formal surveys using groups of customers. Smaller companies and companies in markets where the number of customers is small usually rely more on informal feedback from their end customers , dealers, distributors and agents.
